Graphite Range

Graphite Range in the Waning Summer

Labor Day weekend is a big time for family stuff and Labor Day itself is reserved 100% for family activities at the fairgrounds. Because of that, I wanted to get Sunny out for a short hike today.  I decided to take us up to Graphite Range again. We'd been to Graphite Range back in Winter and we'd enjoyed that thoroughly.

The main trail (Old Mine) follows a burbling stream, so I wasn't too worried about water. Sunny carried my liter and most everything else. I just put on my fanny pack today.

It was a lovely, cool, sunny day and we hiked up the hill with a lot of pep in our step. The woods were unsurprisingly much shadier in the Summer and I put away my sunglasses almost immediately. Looking around, I could see that some of the trees were starting to lighten in color. So it begins.

I figured we'd explore the other side of the park today, hiking trail #8 (a hiker-only trail) followed by #7 and #6. #8 (Boss Flume).  This side of the forest was a lot more rugged than any of the other trails we'd seen on the other side of the brook. It was littered with broken limestone flags and roots. The first quarter mile or so is kind of precarious with a trench on the right and the little valley on the left.

The elevation steadily increases until the trail nears private property and starts with some softer ground and switchbacks.

There are a lot of neat rock formations along this part of the trail, with a neat pass through them where #8 joins with #7 (Over Yonder).

I'm grateful for the helpful infographics installed on the trails here.

There's a big cairn at the top of the Boss Flume/Over Yonder junction.

Over Yonder wanders into the woods a bit until it comes to another stream and ends at a terminus. There's a herd  path that runs  into private land through a marshy area. I think this probably leads to a formation on the maps called "Devil's Den", then South towards Daniels Road State Forest (which also seems to have a lot of biking/multipurpose  trails).

This time we made a point to stop at the little cave near the old open graphite mine. Again, I was glad for the helpful infographic.

All in all, it was a lovely day in the woods. We saw a lot of bikers this time around, but they do seem to mainly keep to the bikes-only section of the park. Do note, when you visit, you'll want to keep an eye out because most of the trails are multi-use.
