Thomas Winter Catch-up Hike

I was reviewing our 12ster list and it occurred to me that Sunny actually hadn't hiked Thomas in the Winter. With a national holiday on Monday we had family plans so it made sense to try and get a short hike in on Saturday. I rang up Jay and he was amenable. I did have to stop at Saratoga Outdoors on the way to pick up some microspikes because the Amazon Special ones I'd purchased for half the price had broken coming down First Peak.

We still made it to the trailhead by 12:15pm and were on our way from the trail register by 12:30.

Three furry butts!

Sunny and his best friends.

There hasn't been a ton of snow, but it has been very cold. The pipe across the uphill trail was choked with ice. The trail itself was not very icy, though. The day was very warm as well, above freezing. I was glad I'd only put one base layer on.

Every day is the best day ever when you're Sunny Days.

There was tons of blowdown on Thomas.

Someone had created a new summit sign. Nice job!

A windy day on the summit is still better than a calm day anywhere else.

We sat and ate at the summit for twenty minutes or so.  Sunny met some folks who knew him from Facebook and he got lots of pets. He barked a lot on his lead which was frustrating. I cut him loose to say hi to folks, then tied him back up after he'd settled down. Someone told me recently that, although he was more excited than angry, that's still called  "leash aggression" and I'd like to work on that. I wonder if it's tied to his separation anxiety.

We headed back down and made very good time back to the car.

Jay translated for Korra: "I've lost count how much bullshit this is."

It started sleeting as we approached the trailhead, about 2 hours after we'd started our hike. Sunny was oficially caught up with me on the Winter 12ster. It drizzled on the way home. We wondered what the conditions would be like next Monday when we hiked the Northern Tongue traverse.

Erica had gotten me a dehydrator for Christmas and the puppies really loved the chicken I'd made last week.

I started some blueberries and strawberries for my trail mix next week...
