New Year 2024

Although the weather didn't cooperate the way we all hoped this year and I didn't get as many High Peaks adventures in as I'd hoped, I can't really complain too much about 2023. In all, I was able to get quite a few hikes in this year, both near and far, short and long.

  1. Numerous trips around Moreau
  2. Dickinson Hill Fire Tower, January 16
  3. 100 Acre Wood, January 21
  4. First Brother, January 28
  5. Cat Mt., March 7
  6. Hurricane Mt. (Berkshires), April 8
  7. Buck Mt, April 13
  8. Hurricane Mt., April 27
  9. Moreau West Ridge, May 7
  10. Lower Wolfjaw, May 9
  11. Natural Stone Bridge, May 28
  12. Algonquin, Iroquois, Wright, June 7
  13. Lost Pond, June 15-16
  14. Colden, June 22
  15. Santanoni, Coochie, Panther, July 11-12
  16. Stewart Mt., August 5
  17. Spa State Park, August 6
  18. Sleeping Beauty, August 19
  19. Cat Mt., September 17
  20. Black Mt., September 23
  21. Sawteeth via Gothics, September 29
  22. Trombley Landing, September 30
  23. Thomas Mt., October 9
  24. Big Slide, November 4
  25. Cat Mt., November 18
  26. Wolf Pond, November 19
  27. Anchor Diamond Park, December 10
  28. Hurricane Mt., December 16
  29. Prospect Mt., December 24
  30. Slide Mt. (Catskills), December 30
Although I am interested in visiting other places and having a variety of adventures, I'd love to have the 46 High Peaks wrapped up by 2025. The reality is that the sooner I do them, the easier they will be for both Sunny and me. Folks say I shouldn't worry too much about that and I am dating myself far too soon, but I still would like to accomplish this sooner rather than later.

I have been formulating a loose plan.

High Peaks 2024

  • Winter?
    • Street & Nye (day hike)
  • Late Spring
    • Blake & Colvin from Elk Lake (3 days)
  • Summer
    • Seymour (day hike)
    • Donaldson, Emmons, Seward (2 days)
  • Autumn
    • Dial & Nippletop from Gravestone Brook (day hike)
    • Saddleback, Haystack & Basin (3 days)

High Peaks 2025

  • Winter?
    • Giant & RPR (day hike, maybe from Roaring Brook
    • Allen (3 days)
  • Late Spring
    • Esther, Whiteface (day hike)
  • Summer
    • Marshall, Cliff, & Redfield staying at Lake Colden (3 days)
  • Macomb, South Dix, Grace, Hough (2 days ... or a day hike if I'm feeling spicy)
  • Autumn
    • Marcy, Grey, Skylight, either camping at Bushnell Falls or staying at JBL (3 days)

I may concede to doing the Dix Range in Autumn 2025 and save the final 3 for 2026 after mud season depending on how fit Sunny and I are. I'd really prefer that the weather be nice for the final summit of Skylight.

I'm about ready for these hikes from a gear perspective, but there are a few things:
  • Lightweight tent
  • Smaller bear canister
  • I have noticed my 3-season Solomon boots are hurting my feet and have largely lost their grip on flat surfaces, so I need a new pair of boots as well. I've been very happy with my Oboz winter boots, so I'll probably go with that brand this time.
I'd be happy for any advice seasoned 46ers might have on the plans I've outlined above, for 2024 in particular.
